Early Saturday morning, accounts surfaced of major blasts shaking the Iranian capital, following statements from Israeli officials that it had carried out a preemptive strike.
Loud Blasts and Smoke Reported in Central Tehran
As per eyewitness accounts, two loud blasts were heard in the city on Saturday. Correspondingly, columns of thick smoke were observed billowing over the centre and east of the city.
“The nature of these blasts indicates that this is a missile attack,” one news agency reported, though it did not initially provide further details.
Background: Rising Strains and Recent Developments
The incident occurs against a background of severely escalated tensions in the Middle East. Key developments leading up to this attack include:
- American Naval Deployment: A significant build-up of US naval forces in the Middle East, featuring the repositioning of carrier strike groups.
- Nuclear Talks: Recent talks between the United States and Iranian officials on Tehran's atomic program ended inconclusively, with suggestions of further talks scheduled.
- Official Rhetoric: Before the strike, a prominent American figure had labeled Iran as “the world’s number one sponsor of terror” and delivered threats regarding its missile program.
- Ultimatum: Allegedly, a time limit of 10 to 15 days had been given to Iran to resolve the nuclear dispute or confront severe consequences.
Iranian Response
Reacting to earlier allegations, Iranian authorities had charged the United States of spreading “falsehoods” about its defensive capabilities. They rejected assertions about missile development and casualty figures as unfounded.
These developments remains fluid, with further updates expected as events unfold.
