The Legendary Anime Concludes a Quarter-Century Era in the Coming Year

It's the end of a long-standing era for long-running series, with the production studio revealing a revised release plan for One Piece, which has been airing for more than 25 years and included numerous non-canon storylines. Commencing in the new year, once the current storyline wraps up, the animated series will take a three-month break until April, when the Elbaph arc kicks off.

Updated Production Plan

Going forward, the series will release two seasons every annually for a maximum of 26 episodes. The studio states this will help the anime to “explore further into the core of the universe — including more content, rhythm, and timing of the original manga.” However, producers conclude by hinting at “thrilling developments” during the series' break, which means additional related projects, such as the upcoming live-action adaptation, set to premiere in the interim.

Previous Hiatus Benefits

The One Piece anime had a half-year pause that began in late 2024 and ended in April 2025. The intermission was for the animators to enhance the visuals and allow the manga to build a lead to prevent a faster anime pace and lengthy recap episodes. The show greatly benefited from this break, and it has managed to deliver fans with countless action sequences, superior graphics, and less filler than ever before.

Embracing Seasonal Format

Although a few summary installments sprouted up during the recent run, the benefits of this new production schedule greatly outweigh the odd pause in the action. This additionally allows the original work, which is currently in the thick of the Elbaph arc, to extend its lead on the adaptation. Per the announcement, this may lead to one episode of the anime covering a single manga chapter, with some alternatively handling more material or additional to make up for time.

It's the end of an era for Japanese animation, as One Piece is the last big series to ditch the old-school way of production, which prioritized airing for most of the calendar. This explains why classics such as Naruto, and naturally One Piece have so many filler arcs, and the standard of the art can vary widely between one episode and the next. Today, series creation is structured in seasons, with one or two maximum releasing each annually, allowing for better quality and greater accuracy to the original work.
