Approximately fifty vehicles have been smeared with what appears to be blood from a person in the Germany's town of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, according to police.
Vehicles, building surfaces and postboxes were vandalized, sometimes with Nazi symbols, they announced in a official communication.
Law enforcement say they were notified during the night on Wednesday, when a man noticed that a vehicle in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been smeared with a red-colored substance.
The liquid had been drawn in the shape of a banned symbol, they added.
Officers then located multiple other smeared cars and residential walls in the nearby vicinity.
Nazi symbols are prohibited in Germany under laws banning the visible presentation of Nazi-era symbols.
Law enforcement say preliminary tests indicate the liquid was likely human bodily fluid.
"Currently there is no clue as to its origin; investigators are presently not cognizant of any harm in connection with the incident," they stated.
Local authorities announced they were trying "to solve the mystery" and have appealed to the public for tips.
A senior political figure stated the incident left him without words and required to be resolved promptly.
"This act hits the very heart of Hanau and reawakens the wounds of the far-right attack in 2020," he wrote on social media, mentioning the murder of nine victims by a gunman focusing on individuals of immigrant origin in February 2020.
