Wimbledon Embraces Video Challenge System This Season.

Wimbledon tennis court with video review technology

The tournament joins the US and Australian Opens in utilizing video review systems.

Replay technology will be launched at The Championships this year.

Players are granted the right to question particular decisions made by the chair umpire, following the protocol already in operation at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

This innovation is slated for use on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the remaining show courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This step comes just a year after the All England Club implemented electronic line calling, which effectively ended the 147-year tradition of line judges.

Scope of Challenges

Competitors cannot to challenge the call of the ELC system, but are allowed to request the umpire to review specific situations, such as:

  • If a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • If a ball touched an opponent's racquet or person on the way past.
  • Possible hindrance at the conclusion of a rally.

Notably, there will be no limit on the number of challenges a player can initiate.

Practical Application

A recent case took place in a recent tournament recently, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against Jack Draper.

Draper conceded it was a difficult situation for the official, but thought his opponent had "used the regulations effectively."

The umpire viewed a replay and ruled Draper was responsible for interference, awarding the point to his opponent.

Growing Trend

Video reviews are not exclusive to Grand Slams. The system has been in use at the US Open for two years and the Australian Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by next season the men's ATP Tour will have video reviews in place at all of its tournaments.

Additional Innovations

Another innovation at The Championships this year involves the addition of visual indicators on displays to complement the audio calls from the ELC system.

This addresses situations where fans have occasionally been unsure whether a shot was in or out.

In other news, with exactly 100 days remaining until the start of the Championships, organizers have also revealed an increase in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
